7 Aug – Hollywood newcomer Kathryn McCormick first gained public attention with her graceful and resilient dancing performances in season 6 of American televised dance competition show, "So You Think You Can Dance", which was why director Scott Speer took a gamble on her.

According to Herald Sun, unlike most performers who multitask, the young dancer had not really considered getting an acting job. After placing third overall in "SYTYCD", the Georgia-born dancer preferred to focus on her footwork at the dance floor even when her friends encouraged her to go into acting. However, things changed when she met Jennifer Gigbot, the producer of the "Step Up" franchise.

McCormick was asked by Gigbot, a huge fan of "SYTYCD", to audition for "Step Up Revolution", which she did, but did not anything to come out of it.

"Everyone would tell me I needed to get into acting classes but I didn't take the time to actually do it. So I think acting found me because I didn't choose to find it," said McCormick.

It was by chance that the filmmakers decided take the new instalment of the "Step Up" series down a riskier path, which led to McCormick to being casted as lead alongside Ryan Guzman, a model that had done more martial arts than dancing and acting.

"They took a huge risk. Director Scott Speer told Ryan and I, "I could have gone a different way, I could have cast someone who had more acting experience and could dance a little, rather than you guys. But when you guys walked in the room it was magic" and he was told by a really good friend to 'cast the magic'. So that's what he ended up doing," gushed McCormick.

McCormick felt grateful to receive recognition from both Speer and Adam Shankman, one of the producers. Speer is well known for directing music videos for bands and singers such as Switchfoot, Ashley Tisdale, Paula Abdul and Blake Shelton.

"To have Adam and Scott and everyone else who was a part of that whole process in casting to believe in us more than we even believed in ourselves, it made us more confident as people as well as actors and dancers," she said.

The film itself blended romance, non-stop dancing and flash mobs in Miami to deliver the message that dancing can make a change. McCormick stars as Emily Anderson, the daughter of a wealthy businessman, who falls in love with Sean, a young man who leads a dance crew in elaborate, cutting-edge flash mobs. When Emily's father threatens to destroy the MOB's historic neighbourhood and build a large hotel, Emily must band together with Sean and the MOB to turn their performance art into protest art to fight for a greater cause.
