Nora Ephron passed away at 71

29 Jun – Three-time Academy Award nominee and BAFTA award-winning screenwriter Nora Ephron, who was best known for her work on Hollywood romantic classics such as "When Harry Met Sally" and "Sleepless In Seattle", died Tuesday in Manhattan at the age of 71 due to a complication resulting from acute myeloid leukemia, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Many veteran Hollywood stars including Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal and Ron Howard were saddened by her death.

"Ephron lifted us all with wisdom and wit mixed with a love for us and a love for life. She was a journalist, an artist who knew what was important to know, how things really worked, what was worthwhile, who was fascinating and why," said Tom Hanks, who starred in Ephron's 1993 directorial hit "Sleepless In Seattle".

Billy Crystal, who played the male lead in "When Harry Met Sally" said, "She was a brilliant writer and humorist. Being her Harry to Meg Ryan's Sally will always have a special place in my heart."

He added, "I was very lucky to get to say her words."

Ephron was born in New York on 19 May 1941. Before entering the filming industry, the American filmmaker was an intern in the White House of President John F. Kennedy after graduating. She started her writing career by working as a journalist for New York magazine, Esquire and the New York Times Magazine in the 1960s.

Her first movie script was Mike Nichols' "Silkwood" in 1983. Throughout her career, she has wrote "Heartburn", "This Is My Life", "Michael", "You've Got Mail" and the most recent one being 2009's "Julie & Julia", which starred Academy Award winner Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.
