"Ted" no box office foul

3 Jul – It is up to the R-rated movies to roll in the 'r' in the summer weekend of 28 June to 1 July at the United States box office, with "Family Guy" creator Seth Macfarlane's feature debut "Ted" leading the pack at US$54.4 million. The comedy beat Todd Phillips' 2009 comedy "The Hangover" as the R-rated comedy with the highest opening of all time, according to Box Office Mojo. Macfarlane himself voices Ted, a foul-mouthed teddy bear who is best friends with John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) after being wished to life by a young John, but the two soon discover that they both cannot grow up right together, as the two ends up living hedonistic lives. Ladies were more than pleased to help a sexy Channing Tatum in "Magic Mike" to second place for its opening weekend, and is on track to give director Steven Soderbergh his biggest opening since "Ocean's Twelve". Along with Tatum, the film stars an ensemble cast of Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Joe Manganiello, and Matt Bomer as strippers who become involved in shadier deals that their boss, Dallas (McConaughey) is making. Meanwhile, Pixar's "Brave" managed to stand bravely in third place against the newly debuted "Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection".

On the other hand, rude teddy bears and male strippers were not allowed onto Malaysia's screens, so audiences have to settle for the rated 18 action fantasy film, "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" for their dose of violent decapitations, which was also its second consecutive week in the box office's top spot. "Brave" managed to break 3D-only curse to gallop its way up to second place from fifth last week, kicking Ahmad Idham's "Mael Lambong" down to third.

In Singapore, Marc Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man" reboot climbed its way to the top of the box office during its first weekend. Billed as "the untold story", newcomer Andrew Garfield is the new Peter Parker while Emma Stone plays his first sweetheart Gwen Stacy. In Webb's retelling, Peter is a genius orphan whose search for his parents leads him to Oscorp, where he meets his father's partner and fellow scientist Dr. Curt Connors, and also gets bitten by a genetically-modified spider. In lieu of Spidey's highly-anticipated debut, "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" and "The Dictator" have been relegated to second and third places respectively.

New movies that opened in Malaysia last week were "Baik Giler", "Motorway", "Painted Skin: The Resurrection" and "Brave" in 2D and 35mm format.

Across the straits in Singapore, the only other new movie besides "The Amazing Spider-Man" was "Good Deeds".
