Anne Hathaway and James Franco

A bedeviled pair: James Franco and Anne Hathaway
In 2011, the Academy felt the worse kind of jonesin' for the youth crowd and tried an oddball bait. "James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons," producers crowed. A matchmaker might've warned against this star-crossed pairing: a stoner poster boy who brought cutting to a whole new level in "127 Hours," and a scrubbed fairy-tale princess who battled evil queens and a devil in designer duds.

The co-hosting stint won a few fans, like Entertainment Weekly which admired their "combination of respect and informality," but a crotchety Hollywood Reporter dubbed the duo's efforts as "spectacularly unwatchable," and viewers tuned out. Instead of seeking solace with one another like any good rom-com or cop buddy movie, suddenly the two got all Darren Aronofsky. Franco bore the brunt of the implosion, but told David Letterman, "I love her, but Anne Hathaway is so energetic, I think the Tasmanian Devil would look stoned next to Anne Hathaway." Hathway's response a la Harper's Bazaar: "I let James know that a whirling dervish is a more flattering comparison than a Tasmanian devil. I called him, and we emailed a bit." (Where are those Anonymous hackers when you need them?) Hathaway didn't get all the blame: Franco also blasted the Oscar writers and said to Playboy about his enforced drag scene: "This is not my boat. I'm just a passenger, but I'm going down and there's no way out."

Famous Oscar Feuds

24 February 2012

With Billy Crystal at the helm, feel-good "The Artist" poised to sweep, and even the best-actor competitive pool filled with brotherly love (and sexiest men), the 84th round of the Academy Awards promises nothing but what the Oscars are meant to be: a feel-good if not familial, star-studded reunion with swanky outfits.

No cage fighting. No backstabbing. Heck, even the Muppets are presenting. You call this entertainment?

Think of this Sunday as a breather, an escapist episode in an escapist industry. But if all this goodwill makes you spoiling for a good feud, you don't have to look back far for some awkwardly memorable moments of insults gone awry, ruffled sensitivities, and even sibling rivalries that span decades. Take a spectator seat -- and a safe distance -- at five Oscar feuds for the ages. -- By Vera H.C. Chan
